I loved taking my senior cat, Marty, to see Dr. Dunbar for years - she is AWESOME. Very thorough, kind, transparent, and a true animal-lover. A couple months ago, Marty became very stressed and began losing weight right after I moved to a new apartment. Marty has always been extremely sensitive to environmental changes, so I wanted to have him seen as soon as possible. Sadly, Dr. Dunbar was booked up so I decided to book an appointment with Dr. Cox who was available. Horrible experience. If you have a senior cat DO NOT book with Dr. Cox. After a brief examination of Marty (she did not conduct urine sample/analysis or a full blood panel) she recommended humane euthanasia. She told me that he had severe kidney disease and further testing would not be worth my money or time; she told me he was dying and me keeping him alive would be inhumane. She said I needed to consider his "quality of life." I was devastated and shocked. I asked her multiple times what we could do to confirm her belief and she again said it wouldn't be worth it because his prognosis was "extremely poor." She urged me to consider immediate euthanasia. I believed her, but wanted to get a second opinion before euthanizing. I went to 2 separate vets (Veterinary Emergency Group and Alpharetta Animal Hospital) who both ran full blood panels, urine samples, and ultrasounds and confirmed that Marty DID NOT have kidney disease / kidney failure and they DID NOT recommend euthanasia. Instead, his panels showed high stress from my move and IBD. We changed his food to a prescription diet, gave him some fluids, and we were on our way. 2 months later, Marty is now back to his normal weight, loving his new food, playing and snuggling constantly, and overall such a happy boy. This is a reminder that YOU have to be your pet's biggest advocate and don't take all veterinary advice at face value. YOU know your baby best. I strongly believe Dr. Cox saw Marty was 13 years old and didn't want to try to find the true problem. She saw an old cat and decided his life was no longer worth looking into. It was lazy and insensitive. Again, if you have a senior animal, do not see her. She will not be an advocate for your baby. The ONLY reason by Common Companion is not receiving 1 star from be is because of my positive experience with Dr. Dunbar.
